What the Sumerians Can Teach Us About Data
Came across an interesting blog post which talks about how the Sumerians possibly “invented” our concept of data through their propensity for writing everything down.
It’s an interesting point of view, one of which has many resonences with modern life - everything and anything is written down on the internet in one form or another. Like the Sumerians it’s only the point of view of the person writing down the data (or probably more correctly: information) which will be preserved. This is why there are so many inaccuracies and downright nonsense available. What we do need are better systems of amalgamating, processing, and cleaning all these various sources. Our own brains are probably one of the best ways of performing this, but there is an issue: our brains are informed by our own neurosis, experiences and beliefs. This means that they are not necessarily going to be the best tool for creating non-biased sense of the information around us.
