3D Movies
Over the last year or so I have been to quite a few 3D movies, and frankly I think enough is enough - and I’m not the only one 1 2. The movie industry is now clearly simply milking this “fad” for all it is worth. Of the movies that I have seen in 3D the only two that really stood out as deriving any benefit from it were Tron: Legacy, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon (IMAX). Whilst the 3D didn’t directly contribute to the plots in either of these films it certainly enhanced the experience without resorting to those cheap tricks of simply having one of the characters poke something out at the audience.
This situation has now gotten so bad that Hollywood are simply trotting out old films in 3D - cue Star Wars, and (for no good reason at all) Titanic - really? It also looks like this is not something that is going away soon either since many films are now in 3D and only in 2D in select cinemas (for the moment this seems to be most of them, but for how long!) Let’s not even get into the discussion of which “flavour” of 3D are we going to be getting 3!
As a consumer I’m starting to get tired of it all. 3D is fun, but it comes with a £2 surcharge on all purchased tickets, plus a £1 charge for the glasses themselves (thankfully they can be reused). When I go alone that’s not so bad, but when I take out the family then its a different story - it’s almost as if Hollywood has forgotten that there’s a recession on. Hollywood appears to have taken the stance of all kids movies are now pretty much just going to be in 3D which is amusing as my children hate wearing the glasses and could care less about the cheap gimmicks used in the films.
In my opinion Movie (and increasingly TV) producers need to really think about their use of 3D. If it really doesn’t add anything to the plot, or the experience then don’t use it 4.
