Twitter Overload Disrupts Cycling Commentary

I was around my brothers last Saturday watching some of the coverage of the Olympic cycling road race. The commentators of the race kept remarking that they were not seeing any of the usual on-screen overlays indicating times, race positions, or cyclist names. I mentally noted this, but thought no more of it - after all I wasn’t really that bothered. Today the Financial Times is reporting what happened.

It’s quite laughable really. The BBC appears to be telling people not to use data services at all whilst the Olympics are on as there is no bandwidth. This from the corporation which is providing all of the Olympics in real-time from their website.

What is more likely is that someone didn’t provision enough data pipes to the venue and is just pointing fingers elsewhere.

After all, didn’t they think that the Olympics might be slightly interesting to people? Perhaps more especially the cycling as Bradley Wiggins only won the Tour de France a few short weeks ago…
